Dutton eases WA’s concerns about radioactive safety by promising Rio Tinto will oversee it

Naturally, when one thinks of nuclear power one’s mind may turn to the risks associated with radioactive material.

It’s a reasonable concern given the high-profile “whoopsies” in the past. So Opposition Leader Potato Dutton has sought to ease Westralian fears over the propsoed Collie nuclear plant by appointing a company with the “best track record surrounding radioactive material safety” he knows.

The Opposition released a statement to The Times stating,

“Western Australia should know they are in good hands after we agreed in theory with Rio Tinto that they would oversee the radioactive safety. Can you think of a single reason why they wouldn’t be the best company for the job?”

The announcement has admittedly swayed public sentiment towards the plant. Especially those who were opposed to it primarily due to safety concerns.

We spoke to a Collie resident who told The Times,

“Rio? Wow, I’m feeling a lot better about it now. If you have radioactive material and you don’t want it somehow getting out into the community then Rio is your man ha ha, sweet”

A spokesperson for Rio said that the company had “in principle agreed to Dutton’s terms” and agreed they are the best company for the job. Adding,

“Rio and radioactive safety, can you name a more iconic duo? You’re talking about a company that has never slipped up in this area”

That certainly does give a Westralian peace of mind, doesn’t it”
