Tony Jones aka Chomper’s half apology today is not expected to calm Novak down. Dragging Channel 9 and Novak into another day of a stand off.
The Serbian medical-time-out enthusiast was left angered by Chompers cringeworthy segment where he riled up a bunch of Serbian fans and chanted that their lord & saviour was washed. Novak therefore refused to do any interviews with 9 until he’s satisfied with Chompers and the broadcaster’s apology.
Understandably, sponsors and Tennis Australia would like the pair to “kiss & make up” so that they can get on with business as usual.
However, all stakeholders would like to make clear to Chompers that they mean that in the most figurative sense possible. An insider told The Times,
“Perhaps it’s a poor choice of words given Chomper’s form but that’s just something we say in Australia. Just to clarify Tony it means to bury the hatchet, shake on it and move on. Please don’t try to kiss Novak”
It remains to be seen if Novak will accept the apology. However, those close to the Serbian’s camp say that a big order by Channel 9 of his magnetic pain relief disks could help smooth things over.
More to come.
