The Flagmantle train is back on its rails this afternoon after Freo gave Melbourne an absolute flogging in Alice Springs.
While it could be argued that Melbourne simply crumbled under the pressure of leaving their home state, the Flagmantle top brass weren’t going to take any chances and have formally petitioned the VFL to allocate all future home games for Freo to Alice Springs.
We spoke to a Freo insider who told The Times,
“Freo’s record at Perth Stadium has been a bit lacklustre this season but I’ll tell you what hasn’t been lacklustre, Freo’s performance in Alice Springs. They reckon that if they could shift all remaining home games to Alice Springs they are a shoe-in for the silverware”
We understand the VFL has been “receptive” to the idea given their ambition to grow the game in the Northern Territory however there are complications.
For one, the request would see the Richmond would have to leave its Melbourne heartland and the VFL considers this “unacceptable”.
Melbourne would also have to play in Alice Springs again and while the VFL is tempted to “punish” them for losing so badly to Flagmantle by making them go through it again they stand by their policy that Melbourne should travel as little as possible.
The VFL couldn’t care less about the Suns & Eagles games and are on the fence about Geelong – Victorian but not Melbourne, so a less-loved son.
Naturally an investigation has been launched into Melbourne’s display today with the VFL being unable to lean on the business class seat factor given Flagmantle’s plane didn’t have a business section.
Up the mighty Flagmantle.
