While motorheads & hoons welcome any investment in their beloved vehicular pursuits, some have cast doubt on Labor’s plan to turn Burswood Park into an world class motorsport facility.
The primary point of contention is the location of the circuit. Especially given there is a very popular circuit close by that milo-tin-exhaust enthusiasts have been using for decades – the Graham Farmer tunnel.
We spoke to a Skyline owner who said the Government could save a lot of time & money by using the existing infrastructure, adding,
“We already have a street circuit bruz, cant put cameras in the tunnel ay? They can’t right? That would be like 9/11 for guys who take 17 year old girls on car cruises”
A spokesperson for WA Labor told The Times that the Government heard them loud and clear but were concerned about the unpredictability of the circuit. Adding,
“We know motorsport enthusiasts love that tunnel and we have the police data to prove it. Every now and then we put an officer at the end of the tunnel to catch those really trying for a personal best on their tunnel run. However, the issue we have is that outside the hours of 1-5am, that tunnel is clogged up like Clive Palmer’s toilet after a HJs voucher sheet dropped back in the day”
It’s a fair point. After all, for most, the mere sight of the tunnel causes an involuntary action of foot hitting the brake pedal with great force.
It’s a phenomenon that needs to be studied. In the meantime, we reached out to actual professional drivers who said a Perth “street circuit” through actual streets would be a more gruelling race than Le Mans. Adding,
“I’ve been racing V8 super cars since I could walk and let me tell you, I’ve never been more frightened for my life than when going for a leisurely Sunday drive on Perth roads. We need to be protected from them”
Indeed.
